Folio Privacy Policy
Folio: Spending Made Clear · Effective 4 November 2026
The short version: Folio does not collect, sell, share or see your data. Your spending stays on your device, encrypted, and is unlocked with Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
What Folio stores
When you add a bank statement or record a purchase by hand, Folio reads it on your device and saves the results in an encrypted vault (AES 256 GCM) in the app's private storage on that device. Nothing is uploaded. The original statement file is read locally; Folio keeps only what it needs to show your spending and the statement it came from.
A statement can be a PDF, or a photo, screenshot or pasted picture of your bank's transaction list. Pictures are read on your device by Apple's built in text recognition (Vision). The picture is not sent to Apple, to us or to anyone else.
What Folio does not do
- No account creation or login with us, so we never know who you are.
- No analytics, crash reporting, advertising or tracking SDKs, and no tracking across apps or websites.
- No connection to your bank. Folio only reads statements you choose to add.
- No selling or sharing of data with anyone, because we never receive it.
Links that open outside the app
A few links in Folio open in Safari: this policy, the support page, Apple's Terms of Use, and the Cancel links beside some regular charges (for example a streaming service), which open that company's own website so you can cancel there. Folio sends nothing with those links; once Safari opens, that website's own privacy policy applies.
Face ID, Touch ID and your passcode
Folio asks your device to confirm it's you before unlocking. That check happens entirely inside Apple's secure hardware: Folio never receives your face or fingerprint data. A random key that unlocks your vault is kept in your device's Keychain, protected by that check, and is never synced or sent anywhere. It stays on this device only and isn't included in iCloud Keychain.
Your recovery secret and backups
When you set up Folio you're shown a recovery secret. Only you have it, and we can't recover it for you. If you export an encrypted backup, the file stays wherever you choose to save it (for example in Files or iCloud Drive under your own Apple account) and can only be opened with your recovery secret.
Folio Plus purchases
Folio Plus is an optional purchase inside the app. Apple handles the whole purchase through the App Store and your Apple Account, under Apple's own terms and privacy policy. Folio never sees your name, Apple Account, card or payment details. On your device, the app asks the App Store whether Plus is active and unlocks the Plus features if it is. Nothing about the purchase is sent to us.
Widgets
If you add Folio widgets, a small summary (such as amounts left or upcoming charges) is shared between Folio and its widgets on the same device, so they can be shown on your Home Screen. It does not leave the device.
Deleting your data
You can delete your Folio data at any time in the app (Settings › Delete Folio from this device › Delete everything), which removes your encrypted spending and this device's Face ID key. Deleting the app also removes its storage, including your encrypted spending, from your device.
The small vault key in your device's Keychain can outlive deleting the app, because iOS can keep Keychain items after an app is removed. On its own it holds none of your spending: the encrypted data it opened is already gone. To clear it as well, use Delete everything in the app before you delete the app. Encrypted backups you exported yourself are kept until you delete them.
Children
Folio is a general audience app and does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
